‘Portraits at the Art Museum’ by David Hanlon

Portraits at the Art Museum

A man lets his head slump
on a faded chair cushion—
Paris, 1947.

He leans, eyes scrunched,
in a leather armchair—
Tokyo, 1995.

I remember life this way—
our drought defining
an entire country,
an entire year.
