Temporary Construct: Us
We have memorized the train schedule not because we take the train
but because it soothes something. you say, this is our favorite time
of day
the between. the almost. the golden pre-dinner stillness.
a pigeon lands on the crosswalk sign,
refusing to be told when to go. our leftovers cool on the counter
as we talk around dinner like it’s a future we aren’t ready to name.
the ceiling fan clicks like it’s making an argument.
we pretend the bills on the table are love letters from another timeline.
in this one, you ask about my day and I answer by pointing at
a coffee stain in the shape of a bear.
it’s easier than saying: I missed you with intention.
like missing is something we train for.
like love is a class with assignments we turn in late.
