‘deficient photosynthesis’ by Kieran Fu

deficient photosynthesis

no one teaches you how to love
but no one tells the trees to reach
for the sky
so you grow until you crack a few
limbs, lose enough branches that
you doubt sunlight was meant for you

and you stretch towards the night
till you forget how it aches–shivering into
each dawn, sleepless, still afraid
of your own shadow
