‘Come Spring’ by B. L. Bruce

Come Spring

Come spring, the poplars bud. The black and white cat teaches me
patience, day by day draws nearer, less skittish. But when the young
boy died, the cat didn’t come home.

Every now and again, the white cross on the hilltop catches the
afternoon light. I see this from my window.

The tulips keep pushing through the topsoil. At sundown, the pair of
great horned owls call to one another from the thick of the firs.
