‘Birdwatcher’ by Cole R. Weiss

Birdwatcher

You stand at the kitchen window
head fixed straight, you are
entranced by something out there
in the yard or the forest

You call to me with a still jaw
words coming out slightly squashed
so you don’t scare off the rabbits
or the deer fawn staring back

Come look, you call to me
in every lifetime. You are there
at the window. the leaves outside,
cool and yellow at this hour.

I am by your side, wide-eyed
in every lifetime. I follow your gaze
to the rabbits or the robins
and copy you, frozen on the tile.
