Elizabeth Shé first captured national attention as the pink-sweatered-sweetie-turned-werewolf in Howling V: the Rebirth. Ten years later, she leaped back into the conversation with her essay, “Free Love Ain’t,” published in the Seal Press anthology, Wild Child: Girlhoods in the Counterculture (edited by Chelsea Cain, touted by Courtney Love on Oprah). Her novella, Letters to Lulu, hits bookstores in 2025. Sign up for her weekly essays at elizabethshe.com.
New Year’s Eve
This is what it means to love god:
Paint a lipstick heart on your face
Adorn yourself with a scarlet boa,
leopardskin pillbox hat,
and a red dead poet pin.
Dog’s ashes in the right pocket
poems in the left
Walk the boundaries of love
until someone invites you in for bread and soup.
Butter melts in the cracks.
You barely need the honey.
