August
August was a rock at the edge of the river
smoothed and already warmed by summer.
The taste of sea salt lived on my skin as I lived
inside my favourite postcard, the one with
the lonely lighthouse and the smiling sun
the one I got myself and on the back wrote:
I hope the light reaches you always baby!
This is how the light reaches me:
slowly
the way a cloud moves
the way the heart does not
The last time I hugged you I heard a dog cry out
as your cheek pressed against my bare shoulder.
The dog can be anything you want—but now he is
this memory held behind my teeth
This is how the light reaches me:
I watch a fruit fly spend most of its life
between the window and the blind
and I call you. I call you on the number I never
saved but always knew
The postcard sun smiles down at us
and this is how the light reaches me:
mouth on inner wrist. pulse to pulse.
